Favorite Movie Quote: ""You married a guy for the sex and then expected him to be smart?""
"Are you happy now, you big butch bastard?"
Here's one of those movies where I have to swallow a little of my previous bile and admit that I was really entertained by what I thought was going to annoy the crap out of me. My Midget (my 7 year old daughter, for those who are unaware) wanted to see the movie because she thought the trailer looked funny.
I expected it to be a retread of HOW TO LOSE A GUY... which while I liked, really was a one trick pony. But the movie turned out to be far more of a modern ROMANCING THE STONE type of flick than a romantic one.
I liked that while these were two people who were getting divorced, it wasn't because they hated the crap out of each other. It really was just because one couldn't tolerate the immaturity of the other. Like "irreconcilable differences" that actually are such. Hudson's character, while wanting a divorce, still saw value in her ex-husband. That he was indeed immature and unreliable, but that the traits that he DID have were the ones that won her over.
And I have to say that I liked that he was hot for her from beginning to end. Even when the dip-sh*t daughter of the rich guy they talk into helping them salvage a lost treasure comes along, tiny bikini and all, he still just wants to know why they can't work their marriage out. It makes him stupid, sure, but it also makes him slightly less stereotypical of a character than would have been in other films ("Oh, I'm so mad at you, bad ex wife for divorcing me. Here... watch me as I make it with another woman! That will get you to want me again!"
The movie also has some brutally unexpectedly funny moments. (Meaning that laughter is found from people hurting one another.) In the end, what I thought was going to be a little too left of the center that I prefer, ended up being a rather good action flick which contained some grown-up comedy not completely derived from the standard places.

I did like this movie, but somehow I expected, well... more. I can't really put my finger on it though. More action? More romance? More comedy? I don't know, but it just needed more substance somehow for me. Maybe I just went in expecting more? I know better than to have any expectations too, demmit. Your review has given me some angles I hadn't placed too much value in and you ARE right about all you said here.
However, I'm not sorry I plunked down the $10 to see it at the theater, I do love Kate and Matthew HcHottie together, so I guess that's something. Well, that and the fact that I actually stayed awake through the entire movie speaks volumes all by itself. :-) |
