Sadly, this movie rides a lot on the tails of the cult popularity of the first. It's got a built in audience of people who have caught onto the lovable natures of Harold and Kumar, identifying not just with their pot smoking but with their struggles as minorities in the work world and otherwise. All mixed in with dirty, strange stoner humour.
The high points are the high-larious performance by Rob Corddry as the intelligence officer who isn't very intelligent, a great observation of what most Americans feel about the people who are supposed to be protecting us. It's great to have NPH back, and the movie cleverly steers away from his outing that occurred between the release of the last movie and this one. The significance of the unicorn is pretty funny.
But overall, the theme of trying to get the girl (it was supposed to be about Harold's pursuit for his neighbor and ends up being about Kumar trying to get back his college girlfriend) is trite and tired. The side characters, other than Corddry and NPH are more than bland or just outright obnoxious where you can't appreciate them for being obnoxious.
I wish I liked this movie more. I wish it wasn't just another middling comedy that I have ambivalent feelings towards because I'd been looking forward to watching it. But I was pulled in by the gimmick that the studios were hoping for: I came back for Harold and Kumar and they remain the same. Even if the rest of the movie seems like the backdrop of a town burning to the ground behind them.
