A Good Monster Flick With Few Complaints
Cloverfield Movie Review
Director: Matt Reeves
Actors: Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel, and Lizzy Caplan
Rated PG-13: For Violence, Terror and Disturbing Images
Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David) has just gotten a new job, except he's going to have to move from NYC to Tokyo to take it. On the eve of his departure, Rob's brother Jason (Mike Vogel) throws a surprise going-away party that's interrupted when a giant monster attacks the city. Receiving a panicked phone call from his ex-girlfriend Beth (Odette Yustman), Rob races through the destruction with several of his friends to save her.
Cloverfield certainly is not the best movie I have ever seen but it is a very well done Monster Thriller! Cloverfield has Great Acting, Great Directing, Awesome Special Effects, and Very Good Writing.
Cloverfield has a lot of good aspects but probably its best aspect is a tie between the Directing & Special Effects. Cloverfield's director tried something different for a change and that was to make the film from a first person view, and that is while the cameraman holds a video camera tied to his hand while running around trying not to end up dead but at the same time trying to remember/tape all of the monster and destruction. This aspect made the film even better and more enjoyable for me personally to watch, it made it seem more real and believable, it kind of made me feel like I was there and I was the one holding the camera, and that is one of the first movies I've seen that makes me feel this way.
The second best aspect of the film was no doubt the Special Effects. I mean come on who doesn't want to see The Statue of Liberty's head be thrown and end up falling right in front of their apartment? That would be awesome! But that scene in the movie was so, breathtaking, and awesome how could you not want to rewind it and watch it again and again, I mean come on! On a different note one thing the film did good was teasing, the film teased with the monster so much I mean you would get to see the monsters back, then it's legs, and then in the dark you would get to see it's face. You never honestly get to see the monster posing for the camera like Godzilla did, and that's one thing I loved about Cloverfield. Overall the monsters design was awesome, it's nice to see something different every once in a while.
The third and fourth best aspects of the film are the Acting & then the Writing. When the cast list for Cloverfield was released I was extremely happy, I was excited not to see big stars in the cast list and only not so well known names. Many people only know Lizzy Caplan from the huge comedy hit "Mean Girls" and some people might know that Mike Vogel was featured in the horror hit "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" but other than that I personally don't know any of the other cast members, and that's one thing me and many people like about the film. Like I said before the first person view and the not so well known actors made the movie more believable & enjoyable.
The Writing is the films last best aspect, but the reason it is the last aspect I'm mentioning is because in a movie like this the writing doesn't even really matter, it's how the actors hold their ground against a huge monster and how they strive to stay alive. If the film didn't have any script to it, it still would have been just as good!
Overall Cloverfield Is A Great Start To A New Year So If You're Thinking About Seeing A Movie In Upcoming Weeks Ignore Mad Money, 27 Dresses, Etc. See Cloverfield Instead, You Won't Be Disappointed
