And One Huge Skank
Favorite Movie Quote: "No. I'm Jesus."
It amazes me that there are so many romantic comedies. What amazes me more than that is that there are still relatively original ideas to plumb (unlike, say, Made of Honor: My Best Friend's Wedding II) like 27 dresses. What amazes me even more than that is that they somehow find a way to take an original idea and have the same conventional outcome.
27 dresses starts us off with Jane Nichols (the radiant Katherine Heigl) running back and forth between two weddings - I assumed that she was the wedding coordinator for all her responsibilities - where she meets sexy though cynical Kevin (the under-appreciated James Marsden). Jane is a giver, we soon discover, and also a little obsessed with weddings, the 27 dresses being bridesmaid's gowns. Kevin, we quickly learn, reports on weddings but intends to help his career by writing about Jane's addiction.
While she greatly appreciates other people finding happiness, Jane carries a torch in secret for her self-made and all around super swell guy boss, George (Ed Burns). Spurred on by the bitter though optimistic friend Casey (the comedically razor sharp Judy Greer), Jane is about to make her play for George when her little sister Tess (Malin Ackerman), back from her dreamy European existence, sweeps in and deceives her way into George's heart.
What I liked best about 27 dresses was, of course, Heigl. She's charismatic, affable, and beautiful with a smile that is pure. She generates real chemistry with smart-assing co-star Marsden and, with comedic assists by Greer, they carry the picture above and beyond its gimmick.
The problem with 27 dresses is that for large chunks of the film, Jane and Kevin's budding whatever is playing second fiddle to George and Tess' relationship of lies and bull's crap. While this reflects the dynamic of Jane's relationship with both of these other two characters, it's still Jane that we need to be focusing on and we're not.
My other issue, and perhaps this just a personal one that I was unable to set aside to enjoy the movie, is that little sister Tess is a f*cking c*nt. Her behavior, which the movie brushes off in a three-minute scene, is cause for justifiable banishment from the family and all functions listed therein. I would never associate with, nor even tolerate outside of work, ANYONE - family, friend, or otherwise - that displayed this level of complete self-involvement. The only way that the movie could have saved this character would've been for her to throw herself on Jane's mercy while simultaneously kissing her ass and feet. If there was a rehab center for self-absorbed, oblivious, evil, manipulative, skanky b*tches, Tess desperately needed an intervention to check her ass in.
When I watch a movie, sometimes a develop my own goals; so long as ____ happens, I'm cool with this movie. In 27 Dresses, I just wanted to make sure that Tess and George didn't get together and that Tess got some sort of punishment. As one of the greatest romantic comedy villains in the history of film, if she had wiped out under a gas truck and went up in a ball of flame I might have been satisfied.
The failure to acceptably resolve this issue (even insinuating that she may end up with George after all!) tainted the entire picture for me. The title for me would've been "27 Dresses and One Huge Skank". I'm all about forgiveness, but the person needs to realize that what they did was wrong and ASK FOR FORGIVENESS. Holy lack of accountability Batman! JANE asks TESS for forgiveness!? This is like when the guy that Dick Chaney shot in the face apologized to Chaney...

| I honestly don't remember the sister other than it was the chick that was advertised as being in THE HEARTBREAK KID remake with Ben Stiller. |

| You WATCHED this movie??? Here I thought you were a real man. Though suggesting a scene where Malin Akerman is kissing Katherine Heigl's ass and feet while begging for mercy...now THAT has potential. |
