Movie Review by Chris February 3rd, 2008

The first time I saw There Will Be Blood was at Fantastic Fest 2007 in Austin, Tx. My first thoughts were that it was a well made film that may garner a few awards at the end of the year. I will admit that it was the 17th and final film I had seen over 8 days so to say the least I was a little tired and the movie's 2 hour and 40 minute running time didn't help matters.
I saw the movie for a second time yesterday. Some 4 months later. Boy what a difference being awake and alert make! This is a great movie. Long story short Daniel Plainview is a Gold Prospecter in 1898. On one of his digs instead of discovering gold, he and his men discover oil. Tragically one of the men dies and Daniel takes the man's son as his own. Over the next 30 years Daniel Plainview goes from Gold Prospecter to succesfull oil tycoon to raving mad man by the end of the movie.
The movie is anchored by what may go down as one of the all time great performances by Daniel Day-Lewis. The movie's final 15 minutes in witch Plainview and his nemesis The Reverend Eli Sunday are a riot. Worth the price of admission all by itself. Though the title of the movie is There Will Be Blood don't be fooled. There's not much blood and it's a slow build toward a climax. If you like storytelling at it's finest though you won't find many much better.
