Not Great

Charlie Wilson's War is a good movie. Tom Hanks hasn't made very many bad movies in his career, and even the bad ones weren't bad because of him. Though, this should've been better. You have three of the best actors of our time in Hanks, Roberts and Hoffman along with a director that made The Graduate, but I felt after watching this that it was just "good". It's nothing I will buy or probably remember that much.

I think the weak spot of the film is that's simply too short. The USA arming the Afghan people in their fight against Russia is a very complicated story. The movie would've been much better served spending another 20 to 30 minutes explaining the cause of our desire to arm the Afghan fighters as well as the consequences. So much time is spent building up the character of Charlie Wilson that he becomes the story, rather than "his" war.

This covers a very fascinating part of history, but it's too shallow. There's a mention of Vietnam and the US abandonment of the Afghan people. To me, that's the true story of that entire conflict. It's not a couple issues you squeeze in between showing how crazy Charlie Wilson was.

Mike Nichols could've had a great movie here. You just spend so much of the movie on the eccentricities of the characters and so little on the war that you don't care about what's happening. Maybe it's just me, but I just don't think you can tell a story of major political and global event that's cause and results have spanned so many years in 95 minutes.

There's definitely some good stuff in this movie. Tom Hanks is, well, Tom Hanks. Philip Seymour Hoffman continues to prove that he's one of the best actors around. Plus, this is a quick and funny movie. It's absolutely entertaining, but it could've and should've been so much more.

I totally agree, I enjoyed the movie but it didn't blow me away at all.
