Movie Review by Lisa
April 9th, 2008

better than your average RomCom

I must say I was a lil disappointed with this film, but only because I have come to expect a high standard from our lovable Mr. Pegg, and this movie although an entertaining RomCom was no "Hot Fuzz" or "Shaun of the Dead". For those Americans out there who are just discovering British comedy (yes the Brits have a sense of humor) this will be a perfect starter movie to tickle their taste buds.

So the plot is not super original, its your basic, guy ditches girl (whose way to hot for him) pregnant at the altar, regrets it, gets fat, new guy comes around, fat bloke gets jealous, tries to chase off new guy, with comedic results etcetera, etcetera. However on saying that what make this movie more than the standard bland RomCom is of course our boy Pegg and his pal Dylan Moran who most of you will know from SOTD, but who I fondly recall from his stand up days and his show "black book".

I'm not really a fan of Schwimmer, I don't know why but the guy just gets on my t*ts (not a good thing). I think he lucked out with this movie the combination of Pegg and Michael Black worked out ok, but when paired with Moran, the stunning Thandie Newton, and Hank Azaria who was perfect as the smarmy American... well then you have yourself an entertaining movie.

I would recommend this movie although my feelings towards it are tepid; I guess I just missed the cuddly Mr. Frost and Mr. Wright and the dry British humor that they bring with them.

Hey! Let Pegg have a career! I think it would be a shame if the Holy Trinity get pigeon-holed together!

Do North Americans know about Black Books? Should we keep it a secret?

Oh yeah, and I keep seeing all these references to Americans considering us Brits to be not funny! Of course they never saw Spaced, Green Wing, The Train, Black Books, Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Serafinowicz, Bailey, Tate...

The best they could do was Friends...???!?!?!?!?
