Movie Review by Laura
April 26th, 2008

Favorite Movie Quote: "What the hell are you doing out here, Fred? Fred, if you're real, you better tell me right now!"

I've always been a fan of Will Smith but after seeing this movie I think he can almost rank up there on the same level with such award winning actors as Tom Hanks. Will Smith carries this movie and I can't think of anyone else who could have done a better job at it than he did. He became Robert Nevell.

In a nutshell - a cure for cancer is found...until it mutates and becomes an airborne virus, killing or mutating the majority of the worlds population. Robert Nevell is the last survivor living in New York City, along with his dog, determined to find a cure.

I loved the scenes with the mannequins, though I have to admit that I found it rather creepy. I kept waiting for one of the damn things to move. I also loved the scene in the video store where he kept looking over at the adult titles, struggling with temptation (looking back he could have been looking at the female mannequin, I'm not sure now).

I thought they did a very good job of telling the backstory through the flashbacks/dreams that Robert had as well as the old news broadcasts that he watched. Showing Sam as a pup in his dreams was a nice touch as well, subtly showing that this was his last link with his family and how he'd had her as a companion from the beginning of it all. They also did a great job with subtly showing you how the isolation was affecting him

I do have a couple of complaints about this movie.

First - the fact that you don't really see the infected until nearly an hour into the movie. I think it would have added to the movie to see a bit more of them, at the very least for the suspense factor.

Second - some of the blurbs that I read indicated that the infected were vampires but before reading that I thought they were zombies. I just felt that they either shouldn't have said exactly what they were or they should have made it more clear in the movie.

All in all, I loved this movie and would highly recommend it!
