OK, perhaps I just didn't "get" this movie. I mean, I liked MR HOLLAND'S OPUS, so I'm not completely immune to the stories about music being the center of our cores and all that jazz (and, as a note, Terrence Howard was in that movie as well).
RUSH is filmed beautifully and really is a love song to the power of music. The cinematography was wonderful and there are patches of music which are good but they never elevate to great. There was only one problem as far as I was concerned. I didn't like the story. Not once did I believe it and I couldn't get behind it in the position of it being a good fairy tale.
It starts off with Highmore trying too hard to keep his British accent out of the mix (granted, he's young and still has more learning to do but let's stop pushing the kid and not make him into the British male version of Kirsten Dunst, shall we?) in a home for boys where he's too clean, dressed too nicely and speaking in too educated of a fashion.
We then cut to what happened "11 years earlier" (a horrible continuity problem if you're aware of gestation periods) and the horribly mismatched couple of Kerri Russell and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. True, the two of them have beautiful eyes and duel looks of longing, but they just don't mesh with one another, looking more like two individuals than a couple becoming one. And being that the movie is PG, there are a few chaste kisses which supposedly lead to some sex, thus creating August... unless Lyla was the modern day incarnation of Mary.
The movie was heavily marketed and will most likely make more money than a much better (and poorly marketed) film released earlier this year, STARDUST. The biggest difference of which is that STARDUST actually has a true element of magic that you feel, included in the storyline as well. RUSH wants you to believe in magic, reaching so hard and grasping at straws.
(Oh, and I'm wondering how many other people will find it interesting that the best characters in this movie are the side players - and are all black - and are far better than any of the leads. Let's stop with the bullsh*t about letting them support when they're clearly carrying more weight.)

| I agree, and I just have to add that I hate Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, he's just to pouty and brooding, granted his eyes and accent are very hot but his acting aint much of much. Being pregnant and hormonal I really thought I'd be able to get behind this movie but it just didn't do it for me. |
