Atonement (2007)

This is the kind of movie you don't see anymore, sadly. Atonement really feels like the 80's model of Empire of the Sun, Out of Africa, Chariots of Fire etc. It's a long, dialogue driven story. Audiences never really seem to like those types of movies anymore. I think that's why you don't see movies like Atonement very often.
You also don't see love stories like this anymore. It's the story of enduring love against the horror of history. Where there was once Doctor Zhivago, Casablanca or even Titanic today love stories have been relegated to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
I can't claim to miss the days of better storytelling because I wasn't alive in them, but more films like Atonement would make our current film world so much better. Epics have died in our cinema. Sure, we might get massive visual movies today, but the epic stories are gone.
This doesn't quite achieve the level of greatness of, say, Doctor Zhivago, but it's in that mold. That mold of war, tragedy, loss and love has produced as rich of cinema has any other.
Atonement presents a type of movie that we need more of. The film isn't a masterpiece or anything, but it reflects masterpieces. Atonement won't go down in history as an all-time great, but it is one of the best movies of the year, by far.
