Do you want to win the War on Terror? Yes or no?
Favorite Movie Quote: "What do you Tivo the History Channel?"
I was amazed at how much I enjoyed this movie because most of the reviews that I had read on it gave it pretty average ratings across the board. The cast looked amazing and Meryl Streep alone has enough pull in my movie world to make me watch something just because she is involved.
I wanted to join the military when I was a teenager, I use to be VERY interested in it. When the jets hit the world trade centers and thousands of American citizens ran to volunteer for active duty I wanted to be one of them badly. However I had children and that was not the best thing for my life at the time.
This film is mostly dialogue with a few intense action scenes cut into it as two American special forces soldiers are wounded and trying to hold their ground against several Taliban militants. These scenes got my emotions running as thousands of miles away a group of American military advisors watched the bravery of these two soldiers making their last stand on satellite imagery.
You see a bond between these two soldiers that only certain people will ever experience. I have been fortunate enough to have a friend that just clicks with me with everything. We have been friends for over 10 years and we know everything about each other and can talk about anything. I would have jumped out of that chopper for him any day and I know he would have done the same. Then when the one soldier is able to make an escape but he will NOT leave his friend behind and climb down the mountains to safety "even if their was a ladder." Wow....talk about a strong scene.
Tom Cruise was surprisingly not as bad as normal, he actually played his character very well and convincingly. Streep gave a good performance but this character that she had just isn't her, or not what she excels at I should say. Robert Redford who directed the film as well gives his same performance as always the very good talking with extremely convincing mannerisms but nothing to go crazy about.
I will say that Michael Peņa and Derek Luke which play the two soldiers stranded in the mountains just were wonderful.
I cant put my finger on why people didn't like this film more then they did. It is a good bit of talking but the scenes are strong and if you follow the war on terror at all this should really hit close to home with you.
