Letting Go, and Letting In

Sometimes insignificant or ridiculous events in life end up having a profound impact on us. For instance calling someone out of the blue that you haven't spoken to in years. Maybe it is a little awkward, and you dont talk for long, but afterwards you feel different and so does the other person. For Lars, who suffers from mental illness brought on by isolation, he makes a breakthrough when he finds his girlfriend, a Real Doll off the internet. His experience is impactive for everyone else around him and the story gives a heartfelt insight to the connections that we make with one another.

Lars is genuine and has a remarkable charm to it in the likes of "Forrest Gump" or "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." The antagonist is Lars' disability of coping with his reality. Like Forrest and Gilbert, who have their own obstacles to hurdle, Lars needs to break out of his shell and learn how to interact in his society. If not he will be alone for the rest of his life. You cant help but feel bad for these characters in the beginning, but then you realize they are going to be alright after all as you accompany them on their journey.

What I like about Lars is that he is true to himself no matter what anyone thinks. At first you think he is weak, until you get to know him and then you see his strength. I like that the movie is consistently positive and doesnt resort to any unnecessary name calling or fun poking. Its okay to laugh at it all. Lars and the Real Girl is for feature films what Northern Exposure was for TV.

The cast was outstanding, and their reactions hilarious.

Great actor but he purposefully made himself look doughy and ugly in this movie. He will forever be trying to outrun the image that THE NOTEBOOK set in women's heads. Poor guy.

Yeah, you're right, but it was The Believer that sold me on him. Also the fact that I cannot resist that dark brooding Scorpio energy.

Actually hes not really dark and brooding more nonchalant. Even doughy and ugly i was still mesmerized by him. However those pants and sweaters were horrible. "k gotta go bye."
