'The Heartbreak Kid' is the latest from the Farrelly Brothers, who hit it big with There's Something About Mary and the better Kingpin, but it's the former movie that they are trying to copy with this one. They bring back Ben Stiller, and get an actress named Malin Akerman, who looks a lot like Cameron Diaz, and put them together as a married couple, and make her insane, and then expect the audience to respond as well as they did to Mary. But they won't. Because it isn't that funny. It is gross and vulgar, but without Diaz, and without much originality, it just doesn't work that well. The Farrellys just seem to rehash what they have already done, gag after gag, and despite the presence of Jerry Stiller (who is admittedly a delight), I did not enjoy this movie much. Ben is Eddie, who gets hitched to Lila (Akerman) after dating her only a few weeks, mainly due to the insistence of his dad (Jerry) and his best friend Mac (Rob Corddry).
They go on a honeymoon in Mexico. Lila gets a nasty sunburn and stays in bed, while Eddie goes out and meets a vacationing teacher named Miranda (Michelle Monaghan), who may actually be his soulmate, and not Lila, who he finds out is a nutjob. Eddie is not particularly likable, in all truthfulness, White Goodman is more sympathetic. Stiller is not at the height of his comic talents, and is not even as fearless as he has been in the past when it comes to outrageous stunts. That honor would go to Akerman, who doesn't seem to have any reservations of any kind, she is bold and beautiful, but her role does require her to do some rather humiliating things, and it makes for an interesting, though thoroughly obnoxious, character.
