Movie Review by Jarrod
October 5th, 2007

'The Game Plan' reminds me a lot of The Pacifier, that awful Vin Diesel as a babysitter flick, and I was ready to dismiss it, but then it captured me with its total sincerity, and The Rock's surprisingly likable performance, he tries so hard, seems so unaware that this is formulaic pap, that I kind of went along with him. And it helps that Kyra Sedgwick (whom I am enamored with from TV's The Closer, in which she is absolutely fantastic) is here, along with an excellent young actress named Madison Pettis, who is so charming and sweet, full of verve, an utter delight. And they all work well together.

The Rock is The King, or Joe Kingman, the star quarterback of the Boston Rebels (a fictional team, if you didn't know), and bachelor, who probably enjoys playing the field when it comes to female companions, but his sexual shenanigans cannot be discussed that much in a PG movie. In any sense, one day a little girl named Peyton (Pettis) shows up at his doorstep. She informs him that she is his daughter and has proof of this; her mother is Joe's ex-wife, who is now in Africa doing charity work, and Peyton asks quite innocently if she can stay with Joe for about a month or so until mom gets back. He agrees (but then how could he refuse) and the media jump all over it, which causes headaches for Joe's agent Stella (Sedgwick), and for Joe himself, who is not that accustomed to fatherhood, but he learns to love it, but of course we know he will, because the plot is so terribly predictable and by-the-numbers, even with the big championship game that occurs near the end.

I prefer The Rock dirty and sweaty and beating the crap out of people, like in The Rundown or The Scorpion King or even Walking Tall, but he shows his lighter side here, and never completely humiliates himself or destroys his masculinity or tough guy image, like Vin Diesel did in The Pacifier, or Arnold Schwarzenegger did in Jingle All the Way. Oh, there is also Roselyn Sanchez as Peyton's ballet teacher, who will obviously become Joe's love interest. This is a good family film, and even though it is painfully unoriginal, it is not terrible, but I think you will enjoy it more if you have not seen countless movies just like it. And that includes The Pacifier, which is what they show to detainees at Guantanamo to extract information from them.
