Cronenberg, you're kinda like the poor man's Scorsese. People will get that joke coming from me only if they understand that I think Cronenberg, much like Scorsese, is given far too much automatic credit without always delivering the goods.
But that's as far as I'll go in comparisons since the C man has been known to turn out some amazing characters. And this movie is very much about being a character study. It's a showcase for Mortensen, allowing him to speak in Russian, be brave enough to fight for his life buck naked, with that whole fear that the men watching must have been having, thinking about their little dude being exposed during a fight like that.
The movie is strong, but predictable. There's a "twist" towards the end that you can capture about 20 minutes into the flick if you're sharp enough (and I'll admit, I was looking for weak points from jump since I (and this must be in all caps) F*CKING HATED his HISTORY OF VIOLENCE).
The story is worth watching and Viggo's character is quite mesmerizing. But in the end, it's a gangster story, just with Russian accents.

I think you have to bear in mind that there are two different Cronenbergs: The 70's and 80's "body horror" C, and the 90's and beyond "serious filmmaker" C. I mean, to me, he has always been a real filmmaker, but when he went "legit" with CRASH, I lost my taste for him. (Actually, I didn't much like eXistenZ either).
EASTERN PROMISES is the first film he has done in nearly 15-years that has done anything for me. With that, I strongly urge you to check out his older stuff, if you are not aready familiar. Start with THE BROOD, THEY COME FROM WITHIN (aka SHIVERS), and work your way up to NAKED LUNCH and THE FLY. There is some really good stuff in his earlier body of work. |

I was just having another Scorsese poke. Can't a woman get enough pokes as possible at Scorsese?
