Eastern Promises (2007)

Finally, a film to make me enjoy Cronenberg again. You see, I was weaned on the t*t of his 70's and 80's era horror films, and ever since CRASH, I have felt left out in the cold by him. Even his well received HISTORY OF VIOLENCE caused nary a stir in me.
EASTERN PROMISES, however, is quite simply a gorgeous movie. It tells the tale of a handful of Russian mafioso thrown into a tizzy by the orphaned baby of a prostitute. Fine work is on hand by all parties, but the movie is shouldered by Viggo Mortensen, and he deserves much lauding for his role. In fact, the tattoo subplot that serves as the axis on which the movie spins was his idea in the first place.
This movie is a rich and satisfying look at an underworld that you might normally never hear stories about, but be warned: it is a slice of life piece. Dramatic events unfold, but it does not follow action movie cliches. And it is all the more satisfying for it. I can't recommend this film enough.

| Ditto. The Special Feature about the tattoo backstory was also incredible, really made the film more enjoyable for me. |
