The Brave One is an action/suspense thriller from director Neil Jordan, who has done films like The Good Thief and The Crying Game in the past. The Brave One is an almost perfect example of what a suspense thriller should be, with a great cast, great story and really convincing characters, the film adds up. Also, we get some moments of nicely shot action scenes and moments of extreme drama.
Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) is a radio personality foer her show I Walk The Streets, in which Erica describes the world of a city in fascinating morals and realities. When her soon to be husband is killed one night by a gang of people in a park, that leaves Erica with bruises and scratches all over her face. When she gets out though, she soon realizes that her case is not going anywhere important, so she puts things into her own hands. She carries a gun, and goes on a killing spree, causing police detective Mercer to get of Ericas tail, but as their friendship gets closer, he gets closer to finding out that the killer could be his closest friend.
The recent Jodie Foster film before this was Flightplan, which really didnt do to good in my perspective, but her performance was as great as always. Erica Baine goes through some rough things throughout the movie, which Jodie Foster took under her control and brought the character to life. At the beginning of the film, shes happy, shes getting married and her life seems to be going in the direction she always wanted her life to go, but when her boyfriend is killed, she becomes quiet, to herself and different in a weird way. In the end, the whole killing spree becomes personal, so all those moments were put together nicely by the amazing performance by Jodie. The film was actually nominated for a Golden Globe Award for best actress in a drama, thats pretty good.
The directing of Neil Jordan is all that it could be. There is one shot in the film where Neil tilts the camera to the side to increase the drama of the situation, I thought that was awesome, but then it got repetitive. He must have done it about 12 more times after that, and it started to get boring. But besides that tilt camera sequence, the rest of the directing was great. There were moments which got a little over the top, a prime example being the beating scene in the beginning of the movie.
The film also had some major flaws to it. There were some moments in which the film felt overlong, and boring. I was almost asleep in a couple of moments, but stayed awake for sake of seeing the end of the movie. Another thing I would have loved to see is more character development on the character of Chloe, and I wish she had a bigger role in the movie besides the one she has.
