Trite, Trite, and Even More Trite
Across The Universe is visually appealing and starts off strong, but ultimately lost me.
The film began as a cliche, as all the main characters have names that appear in Beatles' tunes, which instead of being a cute inside kind of thing as you might think, there was nothing subtle about it, so the effect was more like when your dorky uncle makes a bad pun. Groan. Plus, it detracted from the power and simply made the viewer wonder when the songs featuring each of the characters' names would appear. And sometimes the songs do appear, but with disastrous results (like the "Dear Prudence" scene. Painful). The best song, and the one I bought from iTunes later that same evening, was "I Want To Hold Your Hand," because of the loveliness of the arrangement, singing, and the original approach to the song.
But I got to a point where I said, "Julie! Edit!" She didn't need to include all the songs she did. It would have been more surprising if she'd left some mainstay songs out or if she'd played with the chronology a bit. I could have done without "Sadie," the pseudo-Janis Joplin character. Evan Rachel Wood was great, as were Eddie Izzard (Mr Kite) and Salma Hayek as a sexy dancing nurse. (Well, four sexy, dancing nurses). With all that talent, it could have been a phenomenal movie. Unfortunately, it was not.
