Movie Review by Jarrod September 13th, 2007

'Romance and Cigarettes' is a bizarre musical, where recognizable stars sing along to pop songs and even dance, quite competently on both counts, which really surprised me, but then I never knew if any of them possessed any talents like this. Except for Christopher Walken, who demonstrated his abilities in Hairspray and a Fatboy Slim video. But what about James Gandolfini? Or Susan Sarandon? Kate Winslet? But they all do well. A little too well. Gandolfini is Nick, who is cheating on his wife Kitty (Sarandon) with Tula (Winslet), a foul-mouthed c*ckney.
Kitty finds out, and Nick faces the dissolution of his marriage, and being shunned by his three daughters, Baby (Moore), Rosebud (Aida Turturro, who played Tony Soprano's sister Janice, and she is only a year younger than Gandolfini in real life), and Constance (Mary-Louise Parker, so good on Weeds). Nick looks for advice and support from his friend and colleague Angelo (Buscemi, who played Tony's cousin). Walken shows up as Kitty's cousin Bo and a does a wonderful rendition of "Delilah" from Tom Jones, acting it out as much as performing it. I would say Walken is a show stopper, but everyone is just as entertaining and fun to watch as he is, even though everything is not happy and upbeat, there are moments of sadness and melancholia, and the music choice reflects that.
The songs are excellent, and each duet is memorable, though several of the songs I had never heard before, but I enjoyed each and every one of them. Winslet makes sure that the R rating is well-justified, with cheerfully explicit language. 'Romance and Cigarettes' reminds me of The Singing Detective or Moulin Rouge, at least in terms of the impromptu and often absurd nature of it all, but this movie lacks any real visual flair, but it takes its rather conventional plot and makes it interesting.
