When a family falls victim to a vicious attack perpetrated as a gang initiation ritual, the vengeful father, Nick Hume, vows to track down each person involved in the crime. A sympathetic homicide detective questions her pledge to assist Hume after suspecting that he may have turned to murder as a means of exacting his revenge.
I have now noticed that my four and a half star rating for the film Death Sentence, is indeed the highest rating from any member on this site when it comes to this movie. Though the point of Matchflick is for people to post their opinion about movies, it seems as if people just rate it to go along with the other reviewers. All I am doing is giving you my opinion of the movie, and I say that Death Sentence is an amazing movie. From director James Wan, Death Sentence is not only a well done action movie, but it also tells the story of a hurted father who has lost his son, and soon to be almost his whole family. Director James Wan released his first major motion picture film, Saw, based off his short film. Saw was amazingly well done and I fell in love with it from the start. His next film though, Dead Silence, was a disgrace to horror films everywhere.
The leading role of Nick Hume is played by famous actor Kevin Bacon. The character of Nick Hume though is a complicated one because of the series of life changing events he goes through in the movie. In the opening credits, it shows a series of home movies shot mostly by Nick and it shows he is a loving family man. After one of his son's hockey games though, when they stop to get gas and a drink, a gang ends up robbing the place, killing his son. This is a life changing event because not only does it take away the place where Nick had his son in his heart, but so much anger is built up inside that its going to explode. The man who ended up killing his son was Joe Darley, the brother of gang leader Billy Darley. When Billy ends up getting tackled by Nick on the way out, the rest of the gang leaves him and he gets nailed by a car, he survived though.
From here on out we get to slowly see just how much anger and such were really built up in Nick's system. Nick ends up getting a knife he found in his shed, and after a little tussle, ends up killing Joe. This gets the police suspicious and much more, but Billy, Joe's brother, ends up finding out who Nick is and where he lives. When the film finally reaches this critical point, the action begins. I think James Wan should firmly stay in the revenge and action genre of things besides doing more attempts at horror. We still see that the effects of the cinematography from Saw. Most of the pick up and slow down of the speed is used and the make up effects seen throughout are exaggerated extremely. Im not saying that this is a bad thing though. I love to see gore and violence in a film because its just fun to watch, and Death Sentence takes it to the next level. People get limbs blown off and holes busted through them, but it never takes it to the point where I got bored of it or just uninterested.
The film actually has a pretty emotional side to the movie. Since Nick has just suffered the loss of his son, wife and his other son in a coma, the movie reaches a point where emotions run high. We get scenes where both the father and brother of the loss son are now realizing hes gone and these scenes get sad. The music fits it all perfectly and Kevin Bacon's performance really makes everything right. John Goodman makes a small, but awesome little appearance as Billy's father. Hes funny and in the end, I really enjoyed what him and his character did to the movie.
I may be criticized by this review, but Death Sentence is emotional, action packed and really packs a punch by the end. A great film.
