Something borrowed, nothing new
I love watching remakes or "revisioning" of classic movies. It's always interesting to see if a director can reinterpret a project and make it relevant to today's movie audience. My favorites have been Dawn of the Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Black Christmas(if you watch it as a parody). Then there's the remakes that make my eyes want to defecate like Solaris(which I think was made to show off George Clooney's butt), Ocean's Eleven(which did give me a good nap) and The Hitcher. Halloween falls somewhere in between those categories. It's entertaining but adds nothing significant to the original or the series.
Like Dawn of the Dead, Rob Zombie manages to create a different tone reflective of his own style(shakey camera and vulgar dialogue) and integrate new plotlines with the ones from the John Carpenter original. The first half of the movie is back story. Michael Myers' family could have easily appeared on the Jerry Springer Show. Incestous father, stripper mom, slutty sister and the worst poster child PETA could ever hope for. The breakfast banter is hilarious and sets the stage for more dark humor ahead.
Zombie manages to add personality to the original's characters. Dr. Loomis is no longer a straight up good guy. He's a real person whom battles personal demons. Laurie cracks jokes and is believable as a friend of popular girls. The cast is well seasoned(especially with horror vets like Dee Wallace Stone and Brad Dourif). Sheri Moon makes Mrs. Myers a sympathetic figure and Tyler Mane is a perfect fit for Michael's stature and creepiness. They add depth to seemingly one dimensional characters.
With all this going right, the movie just doesn't deliver when it comes to consistent scares. Some of the setups are predictable and tired. Laurie is still helpless, calling out for people to help her when she should try to save herself. She makes stereotypical horror mistakes. I personally think she's too stupid to survive. The ending is horribly off. It seems like Zombie just didn't know how to end it properly.
All in all, the movie kept my attention. I never once looked at my cell phone for the time. It's a great diversion but nothing that will ever be mistaken as a great remake. Bring friends. You'll appreciate it more.

| i agree with your review here. halloween was not so bad as far as remakes go. dawn of the dead & hills have eyes are the only other two films which have decent re-makes in my opinion. i cringe everytime i hear someone is adding their new spin on a classic tale. i watch them just the same in hopes one day someone might do their homework & actually get something right in the lines of what a great re-make should aspire to be. black christmas? eek, it was so funny i forgot to laugh i think.... |
