Movie Review by Jarrod August 26th, 2007

'War' is a pure adrenaline rush, a well-crafted action movie that is sinfully and mindlessly entertaining. Jet Li is phenomenal, the undisputed star of this film, 44 years old, but still capable of amazing acts of physical prowess and agility. He is a badass assassin named Rogue, who manipulates both sides in a gang war between the Yakuza and the Triad. He is pursued relentlessly by Agent Jack Crawford (Statham), who believes Rogue killed his partner, and he is seeking revenge. Their confrontations are exciting and superbly choreographed, like most of the actual hand-to-hand combat. Statham is no slouch when it comes to martial arts and gunplay, but Li outdoes him every step of the way.
Li can swing a sword and do fancy footwork in addition to most anything else. There are occasional lulls in momentum due to the silly plot, which just serves to connect one fight scene to the next, and I did grow tired of the surprisingly unimaginative vehicle chases, and shoot-outs, which have been done so much better in other films, but 'War' relishes its R rating, and gives you a lot of violence, and it is a prime example of testosterone-laden escapism, no real substance beneath the flashy surface, but energetic and fun, just what most would expect from it.
