Do the Stars Gaze Back?
This is a great fantasy/fairy tail. It is really cool to see how things we take for granted, like knowing that stars are merely distant suns, and interprets them as mystical beings. It is reminiscent of more an innocent time before science came along and took all the magic out of life, or just made it seem a little less magical. This movie is a good way to look back at that innocence that has been lost over time.
Dunstan Thorn was a young adventurous man who wanted to do things others had not done. He decided to venture beyond an ancient wall that was never supposed to be crossed. After tricking the guard and making his way into a village on the other side of the wall he met a woman who traded him a good luck charm for a kiss. They snuck off and made love only to have the guard of the wall bring a baby boy to him 9 months later. Eighteen years later his son Tristan Thorn (the baby boy) saw a shooting star fall behind the wall. As a sign of his love and devotion for a woman named Victoria, he vowed to cross the wall and retrieve the fallen star. When he found the star he realized there much more to life than just day dreams and "Stardust."
Well since my synopsis was so long I will keep the rest short. It was a great story and the acting was very good as well. You never got too distracted by the special effects which were very good, but only added to the story and never overpowered it.
Charlie Cox (A FOR ANDROMEDA) as Tristan Thorne was surprisingly good and fit the role. I assumed he would be whinier than he was. Claire Danes (THE FLOCK) as Yvaine didn't bother me that much, despite her fake accent. Both her and Cox have some charming moments. Michelle Pfeiffer (HAIRSPRAY) as Lamia was absolutely devilish. She owned the character and was only equaled by Robert De Niro (WHAT JUST HAPPENED?) as Captain Shakespeare. If you think his name is theatrical, wait until you see him in the role. I can't say much more, but he steels every moment his is on screen.
This is a good movie and very family appropriate. Children won't really catch on to the adult moments so have no fear of taking your kids to see it.
