Lindsay Lohan is now the brunt of practically every joke, her recent mishaps and bad behavior parodied by Jay Leno, on sketch comedy shows, she is a punchline of the same caliber of Paris Hilton or Michael Jackson, a currently disgraced star, who may just love all the attention she gets. How will this impact the reception of her new movie 'I Know Who Killed Me'? It is actually not that terrible, despite the very lame title, which evokes some kind of cheap slasher flick. It is dark and violent; it is a strangely erotic mystery-thriller that happens to feature a competent and compelling performance from Lohan, who capitalizes on the promise she showed in Mean Girls, which is still my favorite of her movies.
She plays Aubrey Fleming, a college student who disappears one day, presumably the victim of a serial killer. She is found weeks later in rather terrible condition, but she insists that she is not Aubrey anymore, but a stripper named Dakota Moss. Aubrey's parents, Susan and Daniel (Ormond, McDonough), are convinced she has amnesia, though she refuses to accept that she is anyone other than Dakota. What happened to Aubrey? Well, I have to say the film provides a disappointing answer to that question, as it could have gone for something more creative or surprising, and not quite so absurd.
The visual style is alluring and vibrant, and that proves to be the most memorable aspect of the movie, along with Lohan's performance. Ormond and McDonough are not that interesting, they seem oddly distant from one another, and Brian Geraghty, as Aubrey's boyfriend, is completely disposable. Lohan is enticingly exotic as Dakota, and while she never gets naked, she dances in a seductive, theatrical manner, and convincingly portrays two different characters, though Dakota is obviously my favorite. I actually expected this movie to be utter garbage, and discovered that it wasn't, though it is far from great.

People that don't understand the movie "I know who killed me" here *spoliers* I'll explain it to you.
CobaltDuck explains - The Movie is not about a Twin finding her sister like some psychological mystery crime drama. ITs not really torture porn. Its a Psychological thriller. The movie a about Aubrey using her imagination to try to solve the mystery of who is killing her. Aubrey doesn't make it. Aubrey is killed. Aubrey is captured, tortured, buried alive, and the mysterious killer gets away with it. Aubrey doesn't know who is killing her, so she retreats to her mind and to avoid the pain and try to make sense out of why this is happening to her. That part where Dakota lays down next to Aubrey isn't a tired Dakota taking a quick nap its Aubrey finally dieing.
The MOvie on the very first viewing is suppose to confuse you...it leads you in many directions and possibilities. Only at the end does the movie come into focus.
The 2nd viewing you have the time to look at all the clues and understand why Aubrey is doing this.
People that criticise the movie, including newspaper critics, just don't get the point of the movie. It goes right over their head. The movie isn't suppose to make you feel good. It should make you feel sad/angry/depressed/uncomfortable. It is not a normal happy Holloywood movie. But its tragedy will keep you thinking about it for a long time. the stripper scenes make you feel like the movie you see is real. If the ending was a happy ending the effect would not be the same. Aubrey dies...
I know who killed me is a good movie. |
