Coming from the girl who doesn't get sci-fi
I can't honestly tell you if I would have bothered to watch this movie in the theater if Cillian Murphy wasn't in it. While I was raised by a dad who was a huge buff of science fiction movies, there was something to them that I never really caught on to. I would dutifully sit next to him on the couch and watch the movies, either on cable or rented on old school VHS but I never had the heart to tell him that most of the time I didn't understand the appeal. Too smart for me, that's my usual explanation.
Of course, I had the benefit of having him explain the movies to me after they were over. Perhaps that's why I should have brought him with me when I went to see it this afternoon. Instead, since he and my mom had taken my daughter to the Long Beach Aquarium for the day, I enjoyed my alone time and my free movie pass earned with my Regal points.
I was entertained. I liked the dynamic of understanding that what the people signed up for was essentially a suicide mission. They all tried to fool themselves that it wasn't, but being that there was already a lost mission sent out 7 years prior to theirs, they had to have had some idea.
I just kept feeling like there was so much more to the story that I wasn't getting. The bit towards the end with the fifth "unknown" member of the crew on board eluded me. While I understood who it was, I didn't understand his meaning or how he really could have survived to get to that point.
I did really like Chris Evans. One of the few crew members that I found to be uniquely realistic (people are not going to be chosen for these types of missions if they are overly sentimental. While I like Rose Byrne, her crying every time something went wrong didn't ring true with the emotionally distanced nature that astronauts need to have) always willing to do what was best for the mission, including when he suggests that he and the captain risk their health to preserve the health of the man who knows how to detonate the payload, even though he previously expressed that he didn't like the guy.
So... interesting film. Probably more enjoyable to sci-fi fans. And most definitely going to bomb at the box office.

I'm torn, I do find it hard to resist a bit of Cillian however I'm no sci-fi fan but on the other hand my boy Danny Boyle is the director and he hasn't made a movie that I didn't like.
So Zara help me out here, is it worth the trip to the theatre or should I wait and rent it? |
