Movie Review by Lark
March 16th, 2008

A person's a person, no matter how small

Favorite Movie Quote: "In my world we are all ponies, we eat rainbows and poop butterfies :)"

...ok, so that might not be the word for word quote...and I'm sure it isn't MY favorite...but my boys have been repeating it for days, then exploding into peals of laughter....ah the joys of potty humor.

If you don't know the story, wellll...then you either had a horribly underread childhood...or...um....a bad memory? I, of course, know it well, from my own childhood, and now from repeated readings to my own kids. What I mean to say is...I'm not rehashing the story here, so go borrow it from whatever little kid is in your life, it's a cool story, takes maybe 10 min max to read.

This movie takes a few liberties Dr. Seuss' original work, but gets the idea as a whole down pat, and I think, is delightful. The voicework, as a whole was great...Numero Uno: Carol Burnett as the main antagonist the Sour Kangaroo (who pouch-schools her joey, to protect his from Horton's "foolishness" haha). She just has the best voice...she is a master. Will Arnett voices Vlad, the most villainous, kinda scary character...I guess he's a Vulture...anyway, gorgeous voicework...you'll love it, trust me. I also really really liked Seth Rogen's character, I think it's Morton, but don't quote me, and he is Horton's pal, a little blue mouse, and his voice is instantly recognizable if you are at all familiar with him...and perfect. Oddly enough as a fairly loyal fan to both Carrey (as Horton), and Carell (as the Mayor of Whoville)..neither of their work impressed me much. They almost seemed to blend together, as a few times during my viewing, I was confused as to who was who (no pun intended)....while they can both seem to have distince voices at times, I felt that they each lapsed into a blandness throughout that didn't so them justice.

Overall, I did really like it. Of course, as everyone has been noting in the reviews (not just here), there is a LOT of padding added to flesh a small children's book into a feature film, but I think they did a good job..and kept it mostly for the kids...without the raunchiness that was addded to oh, say, Cat in the Hat (which frankly disgusted me)...but still entertaining enough for the adults. Of course the animation was great, except for one bizarre scene, where Horton launches into some sort of "action" mode...and the animation switches over to like pseudo-anime...and that was just puzzling, and out of place and ...well...bad. In my opinion.

OK, that was a really lonnggg review for a kid's movie...I'm done now.
