So far, my favorite in the series. Although it doesn't stand well alone, so I'm glad that I watched the other two before seeing this one. Without the understanding of the depth of Bourne's love for Marie or his incessant need to understand who he is and where he came from, all of which information comes from watching BOTH of the first movies, this one would come off a trifle hollow.
I think this especially applies to the scene where Nikki is being chased by the operative. You wouldn't really grasp the feeling that she needed to get the hell out of there and fast and much of the high paced action of Bourne running along the rooftops would be lost. Which would be a pity since the scene is a heart pounder if you know the history. I went to the movie with someone who hadn't seen the first two and she couldn't get into why I was leaning forward a little in my seat and mumbling quietly to myself about Nikki getting the f*ck out of there.
The following fight scene when Bourne and the operative are going at it is a major highlight. I appreciated that the action scenes (including a great one where Bourne drives a hijacked car off the roof of a parking garage) had a purpose and were spread out over the length of the movie. Mindless violence is one thing. Purposeful action is another. You have to know which one to use in which case and this movie got that element right.
As a series, this was the ultimate (har har) way to go out. (That is, if they decide to end it at this one.) It really is a wonderful capper to everything. But I can't rightfully give it five stars since it is really a companion piece to the other movies. To have been truly amazing, it would have had to have been able to stand on its own.
Out of all the trilogies released in recent years, this one is the only one that I've watched which is worth crowing about. It will definitely be a great packaged special edition DVD boxed set, I can imagine.
