Jason Bourne is still trying to figure out who he is, in 'The Bourne Ultimatum', based loosely on the series of novels by Robert Ludlum, and filled to the brim with over-the-top, masterfully edited action scenes that are consistently thrilling and exhilarating, in what I believe is the best of the three 'Bourne' movies. Bourne (Damon) barely has time to do anything other than run for his life, which is endangered by assassins dispatched by a special division of the CIA, headed by Noah Vosen (Strathairn), obviously serving the interests of some higher authority.
This time, he actually has some allies from within, Pamela Lundy (Joan Allen), working under Vosen, and Nicky Parsons (Stiles), an agent who meets up with him Madrid, one of nearly half a dozen cities he visits as he jumps across continents on a frenzied itinerary that has him getting chased, stopping occasionally to indulge in frivolous conversation. Not that I care. The story is irrelevant, and has enough loose ends that another sequel will probably have to come along and tie them up. All we need to see is Matt Damon pulling off stunts that would kill any ordinary human being, stunts that defy the laws of physics and the rules of logic, but are so well-done it hardly matters. Paul Greengrass, whose last film was the acclaimed United 93 directs with stylish gusto, and Damon has fully emerged as an action star of the highest caliber.
He is wonderful, and never fails to convince us or make us lose interest in him, and we know he has the ability to play characters of an entirely different thread, as much of his previous work illustrates. Strathairn provides a good villain, as does Scott Glenn, as Ezra Kramer, director of the CIA, who is committed wholeheartedly to Bourne's elimination. I love Joan Allen, and she is terrific here, as a woman whose motives are often a bit unclear. Is she genuinely sympathetic to Bourne and all he has endured, or is she simply repulsed by Vosen's tactics? Or is she maybe wanting to use Bourne to advance her own agenda?
Stiles is a bit more straightforward, there is an inevitable romance developing between Nicky and Jason, just not fully materialized here. But is really is quite impressive, and the perfect summer feature, better and more entertaining than any blockbuster that has preceded it in the last two months. It requires a suspension of disbelief, and much of what you see is preposterous and implausible, but action movies typically don't concern themselves with such things.
