f*ck Canada I'm moving to France.
*quite possibly spoilers*
I lost a lot of respect for Michael Moore after his 911 documentaries mainly because he pussied out on a lot of issues in order to make a buck (or million) and neglected the real issues that'll make Bush and his circus sweat.... but I digress. One thing Moore really does well is spike the interest of the general public including the ones who think that reality shows are documentaries (you know the type).
Sicko opened with the story of a couple who lost their house due to high deductibles for medical insurance, and ended up moving in with their daughter. I couldn't help but think this was all show for the cameras as the daughter of the unfortunate couple refuse to move the computer and told her parents that they would have to sleep in bunk beds (if she were my kid I woulda b*tchslapped her back to the womb). The film delves into the formation of your privatized healthcare system and how diabolical it actually is with the whole goal is to charge you for the insurance and deny your claim. I was shocked when a 22 year old woman with cervical cancer was denied her claim because her insurance company said she was too young to get cervical cancer.
We then go on a tour of health care in other countries that have adopted the socialized system starting in Canada and traveling to England then France where they have it sooooo f*cking good, 5 weeks government holiday free school and medical, and if your a new mother they even send you a government nanny twice a week to help you with the baby and do your washing (lucky f*ckers). Moore's journey ends in Cuba which is where he takes a bunch of unfortunate 911 volunteers (hero's if you will) who where denied medical aid from the government.
I found this documentary to be particularly eye opening being from the Uk and now Canada where we have national healthcare. If one thing stood out to me more than anything it was Michael Moore's interview with an old British politician, I don't recall his name but he said something that really interested me, he said that a healthy, educated, confident people are harder to control (or words very close to that effect) and the US love nothing more than to keep their people dumb, sick and in fear.

I haven't seen any of his work yet. I've been affraid to know the things he wants to uncover. I know it's probably good information and I should watch, there's just some things I'd rather not know. Having said that, I'm dying to see Sicko!
"(if she were my kid I woulda b*tchslapped her back to the womb)." That was freakin' great! Seriously the BEST LINE EVER in a review! :) |

I have seen Michael Moore's work. He hits on points that are important to people. He lies about everything to get his point across.
I have also lived in Europe, Canada and now the USA. It really amazes me how many people think that there is no healthcare system in the USA. It also really amazes me that people think it is better everywhere else and that it is free everywhere else. It is not free.. it is why in almost every European country and Canada the tax rate on a $50K a year salary is almost 50%. Nothing is free and the governmenet does not earn money to pay for anything. It takes it from you or prints it for its own use.. You pay, make no mistake.
The two major issues here are Insurance administration (we need a centralized system) and health care related lawsuits that everything to do with increasing healthcare costs.
Not long ago in the UK, my father was diagnosed (by accident) with an aortic aneurysm, something his mother had died of some years earlier. This happens to be a malady that should it "pop" and it can at any time, you are dead. He was told in April that they could get around to it sometime in November. Let me assure you that this happens all the time with these "free systems" but would never have happened in the USA; never.
More than 92% of the French now purchase additional private insurance to fill in the 20 - 40 percent gap in various parts of their government benefits. About 20 percent of the French people skip the government program completely and purchase only private coverage. Mr. Moore claims in the movie - - the vacationing Canadian actually rushed home to Canada when he needed health care rather than getting that care in Florida. A valuable piece of information that "Sicko" conveniently does not mention is that the Canadian government health coverage does not travel. Americans who are insured almost always have health coverage that covers at least emergencies whenever we travel. Canadians, however, have such long backlogs for care in so many places that the Canadian government benefit program can't afford to let people simply leave Canada to access care elsewhere.
Personally I'm really sick of Moore and his lies and mostly annoyed at people who view his work and never question his integrity. You're like a bunch of sheep bleating loudly at everything you think wrong with the world but you don't know enough to know what you don't know nor do you act to resolve anything. |
