Happy Go Lovely (1951)

Formulaic but Endearing
Dramatic irony, how we love thee. This entire film rests on that device with a few nice dance sequences and a decent amount of sexual tension.
'White Christmas' (1954) star Vera-Ellen plays Janet Jones (nice name!) a struggling actress who gets the chance to star when the lead actress walks off. Vera-Ellen is like the strange child of Annette Funicello, Joan Crawford and Cyd Charisse. She is an amazing dancer, fantastic, but she is a bland and boring actress and only a competent singer. The filmmakers realize this and let the main action of the film rest on her ability to dance her way into your heart.
David Niven (1958's 'Separate Tables') plays the object of Vera-Ellen's affection who pretends to not be himself in order to prove himself. He more than makes up for Vera-Ellen lack of acting ability, but this film is seriously beneath him.
A lack of memorable music, the weirdness that it is set in Scotland, and a generally dull story make this film far less than classic.
