Movie Review by The Alpha Craig
January 4th, 2008

I was elected to lead, not to read.

That is pretty much about jest of this movie. It was long episode of the Simpson's, peppered with mildly clever jokes and one-liners. The problem you run into when adapting a half hour long TV show into a feature length film is that there is more time than the writers know what to do with.

In any given episode they are have roughly 25-27 minutes (taking commercials into account) with which to set up the story, conflict and resolution. And then on top of that they need to throw in as many jokes as possible. Therefore you get a very fast-paced funny show. What happens when the time issue is no longer a factor, the writers take the same amount of material and stretch it out to 90 minutes instead of writing for the 90 minutes with the same 25-27 minute mentality. The result is a slow-paced, semi-funny movie. The Simpson's movie suffers this problem.

The premise is simple and much like an episode, Homer screws up thus putting Springfield and his marriage in peril. He now must try to find a way to fix everything, the end. Oh, and there are some jokes (most of which you have seen in the trailers/commercials.)

I am going to do something different this time. I am going to list the pros and cons.

Pros:
They really only had two celebrity actors and one band do voice-over work. It is good to see the movie rely on the talent that has made it a successful show for the last 19+ years. If it is not broken, don't try to fix it with famous people. They also didn't try to tone down or up the humor due to limited restrictions. There wasn't a ton of profanity "just cuz they can" in this movie short of a racy scene with Bart and Marge saying g@d-d@mned.
Cons:
The funniest parts were shown in the previews for this movie so it was anti-climactic when they happened (and no, Spider-Pig wasn't that funny to start off with.) There were a few scenes like the polar bear kicking the wolf that were funny (no that isn't a spoiler), but those were too few. They decide to take and existing character, Rainier Wolfcastle, and change him from blond hair to brown hair and make his President Arnold Schwarzenegger (who he was initially a parody of anyway.) They sad thing is that, as much as I love Harry Shearer's voice work, sounds nothing like Schwarzenegger.

All in all I recommend watching this when it comes to TV. Homer said it best "who in their right mind would spend money to see something they can watch on TV for free?"
