Payne/Taylor Help Make This Better than Average
It's a shame that Adam Sandler, once again, reduced himself to this kind of cheesy comedy. He has it in him to make really good dark comedies and dramas (Punch-Drunk Love, Spanglish, Reign Over Me), but I guess he goes where the money is. Dennis Dugan, director of other ridiculously stupid comedies such as Beverly Hills Ninja, Saving Silverman and The Benchwarmers, helms this movie.
This film is Dugan's best work yet (which isn't saying much). It's hard to say that because this film is still very corny, stupid and filled with nonsensical stereotypes that probably insulted many people from the gay community. But, for what it is, this film is still very funny with at least 90% of it's intended humour being funny compared to Dugan's weak The Benchwarmers where barely any of the intended humour was funny.
Sandler and James work well together and it's great to see two funny actors like these in a film like this with such great chemistry. Jessica Biel, one of the sexiest women in Hollywood, is good in this, too. The scene with Sandler and Biel where they come in from the rain soaking wet and she makes Sandler feel her breasts so he can see for himself that they are in fact 'real' is one of the funniest scenes in the movie.
The humour (although still very corny) seems different in this movie than in other Sandler films. The reason for this may be the fact that Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor (one of my favourite screenwriting duos) wrote the screenplay for this film (alongside Barry Fanaro). One thing's for sure, it certainly isn't up to par with Payne and Taylor's previous work, but it does satisfy for what it is.
Overall, it's an above average comedy that is still corny as hell with slapstick humour, heavily exaggerated stereotypes and some gross-out humour. It's definitely worth a look especially for the two leading actors if for any reason at all. It was also nice to see Niagara Falls (my city) in a movie for the first time in a long time.
