Rescue Dawn (2007)

Jarrod gave a decent background of Werner Herzog, so I'll skip that (except to say that horror audiences will know him from his update of Nosferatu, starring Klaus Kinski).
Rescue Dawn is an absolutely fabulous film. There isn't much along the way of action, but so much the better for it. It's really about a group of people, and what they will do to survive a very bad situation.
Brave performances abound. Christian Bale has come to have a reputation for just putting it all out there, and this is no exception. He eagerly chomps down on a bowl of worms, lets leaches stick all over him, and of course sheds some pounds (though not to his Machinist extreme).
But it is important to note that Steve Zhan, and Jeremy Davies in particular, also throw themselves into their work, and the manifest benefits are many. The more real the actors are, the more invested in the story we are.
The Thai locations are all lush and forbidding, and the fearlessness of the cast meld with that and create a dense wall of dread. The group's captors are just poor villagers fed a jingoist agenda and armed with rifles, and as the food supplies dwindle and the sorties by the US bombers increase, so does their (the villagers') mindset deteriorate. The whole second act is like a tinderbox begging for a spark.
Since the film is an account of main character Dieter Dengler, it's no huge surprise how the film turns out, but it is a mesmerizing ride getting there. I think, like Bug a few months ago, Rescue Dawn is a good antidote to the dredge of summer movies being flogged in the dog days of August. Seek it out.
