And HOW exactly do we determine quality?
A little piece of info that I love to tell people. Patton Oswalt, the comedian who provides the voice of the main rat Remy in this flick, has the same birthday as me, January 27th. Not that you would care or anything, I just like to point it out because Aquarians just plain rock.
On to business...
I liked the movie. It's entertaining. I especially like (after my last column's little diatribe on famous people doing voices in animated movies) that they used some people who are a little less well known. However, there wasn't much for me to cling to. That seems to be one of the main problems that I'm finding with the more recent animated movies (and non-animated ones as well).
See, the reason why I love LILO & STITCH is because I could relate to the little demon. That he didn't ask to be around and is being punished for behaviours that were not of his making. That just because he's naughty doesn't mean that he can't have any good in him.
The reason why I liked FINDING NEMO so much was that I could understand the plight of Nemo. The set-up is basically that of a developmentally disabled child who is having issues with his overprotective father. I see that a lot in my line of work. Watching the two of them figure their sh*t out really moved me.
The problem with RATATOUILLE is that while it has amazing animation, a funny script and even some really good voice performances, I couldn't care a lick about any of the characters. Linguini in particular never resonated with me. I liked the female chef mainly when she told him off and then grew irritated with her for softening so quickly.
Remy, while I love Oswalt, suffers from the same thing. He doesn't really seem all that involved with anyone but himself. Sure, it might seem like he is all about helping Linguini, but at what cost? He really just is using him as much as the man is using his culinary skills right back. It would be fine if we explained to children that life is just a series of "what can I get from my relationship with you?"s but no one is willing to step up to the plate and admit that NO ONE is free from having parasitic moments in their life.
But I dye grass.
I liked the movie because it was amusing and gorgeous to look at. However, it really didn't stick with me beyond a few hours and then I didn't care all that much anymore. I gave myself a day to think about it and see if it sank in more. It didn't. And I was afraid if I took much longer before posting this, I would have forgotten about it completely.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Gorgeous animation (especially the hand-drawn stuff during the credits), but that was about the extent of it. Of course, Janeane Garofalo goes a long way towards helping me have a soft spot for the film :)
In any case, Boo Bear LOVED it, so I guess it was worth the time. And when Ego took his first bite of the ratatouille, I think that might have been the most precious thing I have ever seen. |
