Movie Review by Chris
August 16th, 2007

If you remember Bruce Almighty back a few years ago, you should remember the very funny scene where Bruce (Jim Carrey) messes up his least favorite anchorman Evan Baxter out of revenge for being so popular. Little did people know that this event would trigger a sequel to the funny Bruce Almighty. Evan Almighty is weaker then Bruce and has some little laughs and giggles here and there, but the story gets so caught up in many things it gets jumbled and eventually reaches a point where the jokes are stupid and the effects are the only thing impressing us.

Newly appointed Congressman Baxter (Steve Carrel) just moved into a large house with plenty of land, nice grass and nice neighbors. When he gets on Congressman Long's (John Goodman) good side, things start looking even farther up for Evan as he has the repect of Long and his career could now reach an even bigger breaking point. One day though, large pieces of lumber and signs which constantly show the number 6:14 almost everywhere he looks. One morning hes on his way to work when a mysterious man who claims himself to be God (Morgan Freeman) tells him there will be a flood and he has to build an ark, God begins playing pranks on Evan and then Evan and everyone else finally believe that what that mysterious man said was true.

After his role in The 40 Year Old Virgin and playing the lead guy in the award winning show The Office, Steve Carrel has been approched with many different roles to play in comedies and dramas alike. As I wasnt a big fan of Dan In Real Life, it seems as if the more comedy relief Steve is better then the oh so serious Steve. Evan Baxter is a clumsy character who is lazy and will try and do anything in order to impress Long, the man whos shadow is always covering Evan's son. The thing about Evan is that everything he does wrong leads to what he has to do with the ark, he dislikes dogs and animals and treats them like trash when they appear in his lawn and when he builds the ark, he must save the animals. Plus he also puts work before family so even though the events cause a brief brakeup in the family, he learns that family is very important to him and that he must put them before his job. The casting of Morgan Freeman as God sparked alot of controversy between everybody in Bruce Almightsy, claiming that it wasnt right for a black man to play the role of God. I didnt quite take sides on this, but he does a good job with the role from what I have seen. His role is smaller here and he makes less appearences, but hes still funny.

Lately, movies have been following the spoof trail where they try and accomplish laughs by having somebody fart or throwing up on somebody else, either that or another piss and sh*t joke. There are a few in Evan Almighty, not bad enough to break the point of their harmless PG rating, but there are some here. Not all of them are funny and they just put a smile on our faces because there just so stupid. We have a funny scene where there is a montage of Evan beginning to build the ark and he is constantly getting hurt, well we hear him cry like a little girl and its a hilarious scene.

During the last 5 minutes of the movie, there is a well done scene where the Dam breaks and all the water comes pouring into the town, the flood. Evan gets all the people and animals on the boat and follows the path of the water. This is a scene which demonstrates just how much work the effects team put into this project and I had to pay respect towards it.

Evan Almighty is funny, but everything else seems a little below average.
