I will say that I did not like Bruce Almighty, so I therefore did not expect to like Evan Almighty, its follow-up, which focuses on Jim Carrey's nemesis from teh first movie, newscaster Evan Baxter, played by Steve Carell. Carell is a wonderfully talented comic actor, so good in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and in Little Miss Sunshine, and on TV's The Office, but here, the idiotic screenwriter (Steve Oedekerk) has chosen to neuter him, given him nothing to do but pound himself with a hammer, get pooped on by birds, and other such things. It all seems trivial and immature.
Rated PG, it is obviously intended to appeal to younger viewers, namely teenagers, whose senses of humor have not yet risen beyond that of a child. The story of Noah's Ark is ripe for parody, as is most everything else in the Bible, and this movie has potential, it could have been something along the lines of Dogma perhaps, profane and offensive, alas hilarious and smart, but it has decided to take a different route. Morgan Freeman is great as God, a kind of authoritative prankster, obviously relishing his status as a supreme being, but also taking time to share his wisdom and kindness with all. The real star is Wanda Sykes, who plays Evan's aide, who basically says something funny every time she opens her mouth, though she cannot be as crude and provocative as she is normally, during her stand-up routines. Sykes is about all that is amusing.
I wondered about the darker side of the plot, about whether the flood that is going to occur will cover the whole earth, as its Old Testament predecessor did, or just be contained in the suburban area Evan and his family has moved to. What will happen to all those who do not get on the ark? Will they all perish? What exactly is the point of asking any of these questions, one might ask. I do not really know, but they entered my mind as I watched this debacle. The special effects are decent, seeing a large wooden ship sail towards the Capitol building in Washington DC is as impressive as most anything in the typical action summer blockbuster. If you want a comedy, see Knocked Up. If you want a religious spoof, watch Life of Brian or Dogma. There is little reason to see this.

| I did like Bruce Almighty but this looks pretty stupid. I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in that opinion. Don't think I'll bother watching this one. |
