From the mouth of a proud atheist
I'm going to point out a couple of things. First, I saw this with my group, three developmentally disabled adults who are mostly non-verbal and have been raised in religious families. This was something that all of them had advocated in their own ways that they wanted to see, so we made a special trip and paid a matinée price for a first run instead of waiting for it to hit the $3 theater like we usually do.
It was a huge hit for them. I can understand why. The movie has a gentle nature and is trying to convey a fairly good concept: "Acts of Random Kindness." There are animals, no swearing and some very funny moments from Wanda Sykes. All three of my clients were alert and active in taking the movie in, something that is a rarity these days.
For those reasons, I'm giving the movie a higher rating than I normally would if this was based on my opinion alone.
My thoughts on the matter are a little more bitter. Steve Carell, a man who first became famous with his dry deliver on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show," and carried that humour over into the movie that this one is an offshoot of, BRUCE ALMIGHTY. But where BRUCE did have the soft bellied undertones, it also had some bite to it. Making Aniston's boobs bigger, for one.
There is none of that here. What the film makers have done is essentially castrate Carell, a fate that many of the animals in the film have suffered, so I suppose he was in good company.
I would still give the movie points for Sykes' contribution as well as the strange offering of Jonah Hill (currently in KNOCKED UP and soon to star in SUPERBAD). Plus any movie that has a cameo with Molly Shannon gets a little pat on the back from me. I still think she was one of the best female assets that SNL ever had. It's a pity that there hasn't been a proper niche created for her in film.
From the family, religious, soft bellied perspective, this is a half-way decent movie. From the perspective of a grown-up looking for a little more comedy and a little less passive-aggressive preaching, this is more of a 1 1/2 star affair.
Take is as you will.
