Movie Review by Zara
May 5th, 2008

The stageplay "Beautyshop" was meant to be this movie and not the bastardized Hollywood version with Queen Latifah, a ridiculous Kevin Bacon and an obnoxious sounding Alicia Silverstone. But Hollywood beat the black movie industry to the punch and thusly THE SALON was renamed such and never given a release in theaters.

Personally, there's more to like and relate to about this movie than in the other one. The main problem that I had with it was that it was entirely too preachy for large sections, making everything so simple and cut and dried. The argument against white women dating black men are told loudly and meekly protested by the one brave white woman in the shop (a surprisingly interesting Brooke Burns, someone that I hadn't given much thought to before this).

The speech given by the token gay black male working in the salon feels contrived too, even if the actor is giving it his all in trying to convey the depth of the issue of homophobia. And sadly, Terrence Howard is just not in this movie enough, even if his character is an a**hole.

But I give the film more credit for having a black production company see the stageplay through to where it was supposed to go and keeping it "within the family" in getting it made, edited and produced. As well as serving up the ever so fine Vivica A Fox as the lead character.
