Why I love chinese food
If you've seen Beauty Shop, you'll notice that these two films have many plot lines in common. It's because both were adapted from the stage play Beauty Shop, although this one is the more faithful adaptation of the two(the one released two years ago was presumably Queen Latifahnized). Anyway the film also comes from the same guys/girls behind the Barbershop movies, so expect a heavy dose of political conversation mixed with bouts of humor.
The movie focuses on a beauty shop owner(the very beautiful Vivica A. Fox-you may remember her from such Oscar caliber movies like Boat Trip and Booty Call) whose shop is on the verge of being closed down due to the future plans of the Dept of Water and Power. Much like a typical day in the life of everyone she tries: to save her shop, discipline her son, keep the peace among co-workers and romance an attorney(Darrin Dewitt Henson-the guy from TV's Soul Food and the infamous Darrin's dance grooves). The romance is troubled from the start because he's representing the Dept of Water in the case against her shop.
The movie unfortunately has a very familiar plot and even some of the ideas and discussions in the aforementioned Barbershop movies appear in this one as well as similar characters(the Kym Whitley character is a carbon cut out of the Cedric the Entertainer character from Barbershop). But beyond this, the movie will satisfy its target audience which by the way does not include white supremacists and homophobes-if you want to piss either one of these groups off, just send them a copy of the movie.
All in all the movie is alright. It radiates messages of love and acceptance and who doesn't love that?
I know the title of the review has nothing to do with the movie but it was what I was feeling at the time.
