Man...
I'm not a big fan of Ashley Judd. I never have been and I always wonder why I keep trying to like her. I've seen almost everything that she's been in, perhaps in just my twisted way of watching everything just to make absolutely certain that I don't like someone (like my masochistic streak in watching Scorsese).
This movie didn't help me to like her. In fact, while there were moments where she was borderline "OK" in it, I actually lost some respect for her in going that route of needing to "uglify" in order to try and get people to take you seriously. (And then going and taking off all her clothes in the weirdest and most unnecessary manner.)
I actually felt more inspired to watch this movie for Michael Shannon, the guy in the lead role of Peter, the one who believes that he's been infested with bugs. I really liked him in GRAND THEFT PARSONS, where he was one of the best performances in that flick. That's the case here as well. While you can't entirely relate to any of the characters in the movie, especially not (or I would hope not) his paranoid schizophrenic one, he's still the most believable acting performance from beginning to end.
I say from beginning to end because Judd is at times relatable and believable. But when she reaches into histrionics to convey how her character has been driven to madness by Peter, she loses all credibility. Connick is never believable in any role that he's in and the blonde chick with the fake tattoos is just f*cking annoying. (When are they going to figure out that fake tattoos are more distracting than having anything of value to add to a character's presence?)
I have to say that when there are impassioned monologues, you're drawn into listening to them. But ultimately, they end up cheating you, never getting into the true heart of the madness and never getting into the center of reality. This is a movie which tries to teeter along all angles and fails at all of them.
But at least it tries, for which I am giving it partial credit.
