Movie Review by The Alpha Craig
September 30th, 2007

There are five different types of chairs ......

... in this hotel room.

If you ever wondered what Cal (Seth Rogan's character from 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN) or David (Paul Rudd's character from 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN) were doing when they weren't working at SmartTech and making fun of Steve Carell's character in 40 Year Old Virgin, this movie is gives you a good impression of what they might have been doing. In fact, according to Knocked Up director Jud Apatow, this was originally planned to be a spin-off of The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Ben Stone and his buddies Jay, Jonah, Jason (say that fast and it sounds like Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jamison to all of the Spidy fans out there) and Martin goes out for a night of clubbing and drinking. During the course of the night Ben meets Alison Scott and her sister Debbie. He and Alison hit things off and end up hooking up. They later found out that their night resulted in Alison becoming pregnant. They both found out just what it means to be knocked up.

This movie felt like a continuation of 40 Year Old Virgin. I mean that not only in the story sense, but in the humor and overall feel. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. Jud Apatow is going to put a movie called "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" which seems to fall in line with these other two movies. He needs to be careful not to over saturate the market. Kevin Smith had a good thing going with Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and then Dogma. That would have been a good end to the Jersey saga but he put out Jay and Silent Bob strike back which was decent. Then he put out Clerks 2 which I was not particularly fond of. The point is that Apatow should know when to switch things up (which looks like he is doing by putting out Ray/Walk the Line parody "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story") so I think he is going to be just fine.

Seth Rogan (GREEN HORNET) as Ben Stone reminds me so much of a friend I used to work with at my old comic book store Matt. He is a funny easy going guy that would be there for you once you got his respect. Jay Baruchel (FANBOYS) as Jay, Jonah Hill (SUPERBAD) as Jonah, Jason Segel (BYE BYE BENJAMMIN) as Jason and Martin Starr (SUPERBAD) as Martin were the guys who flipped you crap whenever they could, but had your back no matter what. Katherine Heigl (27 DRESSES) as Alison Scott was good, I don't really find her all that attractive, but she fit the part and made the best of it. Paul Rudd (OVER MY DEAD BODY) as Pete was the perfect "cool dad" who was still a child at heart. Leslie Mann (DRILLBIT TAYLOR) as Debbie really worked the "older but still hot, or at least trying" role to perfection. Many of the cameos were great except one. Ryan Seacrest played himself as a total pampered, self important jerk. I didn't buy it because, in order for him to be that way, he would have to have a personality. I seriously doubt there is one independent thought floating around in his near-vacant head beyond grooming techniques. I liked this movie because it was just senseless fun and that is the perfect distraction we all need at times.

I really enjoyed this movie as well, but I thought it had a little more heart toward the end...not just all senseless fun, but mostly. The fun made it impossible to stop watching though and the Superbad guys coming together again was awesome! I completely agree about Ryan Seacrest...lol.

I think people laughed at him, but secretly thought, "Yeah I bet he is exactly like that in real life." I doubt he has enough of information not spoon-fed to him in life to be that much of a jerk. Just my opinion, but at least I have one of my own (cough*Seacrest's a douche*cough.) Thanks again Misty.
