Steely Dan DOES f*cking suck
First off, let me say that no matter what this movie did, it was automatically going to get 4 stars minimum from me simply for bringing Seth Rogen, Jason Segel and Martin Starr back together. I'm just sad that they couldn't find a way to work in John Francis Daley or Samm Levine.
But I dye grass...
Let me start off with my only gripe about this flick. Katherine Heigl. There's something about her that can't bring me to hating her completely. Perhaps it's because she's got a great rack. Perhaps it's just having seen her in movies and television so long that she's become like that houseplant in the corner that really doesn't do anything special and isn't even all that visually stunning to catch your attention but somehow you just kinda forget that it's there.
Leslie Mann, the actress who plays Heigl's sister (and also the wife to director/writer Judd Apatow), is the kind of woman who should have gotten the lead character in this movie. Someone who had a little bit more of a personality. The feeling of the two leads being mismatched was a good one, but just a tad flat based on the fact that unless Heigl was screaming, she just wasn't interesting enough to be with Rogen.
What's great about this movie? The fact that no punches are pulled. Apatow takes things that are painfully unfunny and makes you realize how ridiculous that they are and by that accord the kind of funny that you don't want to laugh at because it hits too close to home. The fact that you cringe and squirm in your seat a little because you understand some of the bits on an intimate level.
So there is some brutal humour in it. The scene in which the bouncer gives Mann the break-down on why he's not letting her into the club is just sheer brilliance. I doubt any other director/writer could have gotten away with it aside from Apatow. He's managed to corner the market on realistically unrealistic painfully funny stuff.
Try saying that five times fast.
The 'shrooms scene at Cirque de Soleil? (with the subsequent scene with the chairs) *nod*
There are portions which are stupidly unrealistic as well. Idealistic sh*t like Heigl not being on birth control. The whole concept that Canadian men are loyal and sweet. Again, pardon my dying.
Blah blah blah... I'm bored with this review now. The movie is funny. I laughed. I liked it. Spend money on it, I put it in my top ten for the pool. I'd like to win that.
