Movie Review by Chris
August 31st, 2008

Slobby Ben and up and coming career girl Alison meet at a bar, and end up having a one night stand. Eight weeks later, Ben is shocked when Alison meets him and reveals that she is pregnant. Despite having little in common, the two decide that they have to at least try to make some kind of relationship work for the baby's sake.

One of the funniest things about Knocked Up is that our two main characters, Ben and Alison, are two completely different people who in the beginning are completely oblivious to one another. This actually shows something about life as a reality, it shows that sometimes the unexpected comes true and that we never know what to expect in life. A prime example, Ben and Alison falling in love and having this baby. Though they both disagree that her being pregnant is a good thing, they take away all the bad things about each other and try to make everything work out as she goes through pregnancy and watches Ben change with every passing moment.

For a period of time, it was Steve Carrel who took most of these comedic roles in control and made the characters who they are. After minor roles in Superbad and 40 Year Old Virgin, Seth Rogen now has a full role for Knocked Up, and he really does an amazing job with the expectancy of the role. As I said before, its funny that the two characters are complete opposite and attracted just because of theyre goofy one night stand which leaves them stuck between themselves when she finds out shes pregnant. Recently Ben has been that perfect stoner character, Pineapple Express really puts his talents to that certainty level. Just like 40 Year Old Virgin, he is a stoner here and this is shown for the opening of the movie. When he finally meets Alison, a perfect girl who is drug free, doesnt smoke and puts her job first. Unlike Ben, she actually wants to go somewhere in her life.

When Alison and her sister Debbie decide to go party the night away at a fancy club, she meets Ben after he steals a beer from the bar. Ben and his friend go and talk to them and Debbie has to leave, leaving Ben and Alison together to dance. Now since theyre drunk, they just kind of go with the flow and eventually Alison wakes up in bed to a naked Ben, something she is disgusted by. Recalling the previous night over breakfast, she quickly learns that everything she did with Ben was a grave mistake. Ben tells her about his celebrity porn site and how he smokes weed and such, Alison is completely surprised she even talked to this guy.

Knocked Up does a great job when it comes to putting together this story of our characters and blending side-splitting comedy in between all of it. Most of the humor is dealt between Ben and all his friends smoking away while talking about naked celebrities, or goofy little scenes between Ben and Alison. Ben and Alison's sister Debbie dont start off to well, she actually thinks that Ben was treating her kids like dogs as he sits outside and tells her daughter to fetch the ball hes throwing around. Another thing I find funny is how quickly the movie turns from comedy to a more serious tone when Alison goes into labor. The camera and visual style gets dim and everything takes a more serious tone. I do like the fact that Ben is changed by all of this and finds himself to be a new man.

Knocked Up is hilarious and one of the funniest movies of 2007. With great performances by our cast and the script is great, it is an amazing movie which was a delicate surprise to me.
