Movie Review by The Alpha Craig
January 11th, 2008

Run tests on a corpse major.

That would have solved so many problems in this movie. I liked this movie, but it wasn't as cohesive as the first. This followed more along the lines of "whatever can go along, will go wrong" based upon stupid decisions. In the 28 Days Later most of what happened could not be avoided. People were making choices based on survival instinct. If you watch this movie you will see right away that the first bad choice was based on selfishness. I guess the same could be said about the first movie, but that was because the animal rights activists had good intentions. In this movie, the two people that made the choice were just being selfish and careless.

After the outbreak of the deadly "rage" virus, people barricaded themselves in houses to wait out the attacks of infected people in hopes that help would come. Don and his wife Alice Harris were preparing to have dinner with a small group of survivors when a boy showed up at their door with a group of infected people following. They soon overrun the house and only Don made it out alive, leaving his wife whose fate was unknown. Much later sterilization Britain took place and people started to return. Dons' son Andy and daughter Tammy met their father at a train station. The children missed their mother and wanted to know if she was alive so they left the safe zone of the city for the infected zone to their own house. They found out first hand what was left waiting for them "28 Weeks Later."

Sorry folks, another long synopsis. I will try to cut for the rest of the review. So basically this movie was a roller coaster ride in the story. I don't mean in terms of twists and turns. I mean that every time something good started happen as it metaphorically reached a peak, it dipped back down into bad choices and expected outcomes. I liked this movie, don't get me wrong. Things could have gone smoother though if certain people took that left at Albuquerque.

Robert Carlyle (FLOOD) as Donald "Don" Harris was cowardly. One of the first things you see is him running away and that sets up his role for the remainder of the movie. Jeremy Renner (SNAPPERS) as Sergeant Doyle was a strong character. Kind of a jerk, but he seemed man up a little too quick to be very believable. Rose Byrne (JUST BURIED) as Major Scarlet Ross surprised me. I wasn't expecting much of her character, but she didn't get on my nerves like I thought she might. Imogen Poots (WISH) as Tammy Harris and Mackintosh Muggleton as Andy Harris were realistic in the sense that they lacked common sense as children and teens would in this situation. That didn't make them any less irritating.

This was a good movie though. I didn't like it as much as the sequel. The two felt like a computer game series I have been playing a lot lately called "Half Life and Half Life 2." The whole survival against a violent enemy aspect is very similar and plot points in the movie were very similar as well which made the movie feel like it was based on a video game (I could see a video game adaptation.) The ending of this movie was a nice touch although I am not giving it away. If you see 28 Days Later you will probably like this movie about 3/4s as much, but it is still very good. Okay that was long, sue me.
