Solid
I was another one of those people who wasn't all that sure about a sequel to the superb 28 DAYS LATER, especially without Danny Boyle and Alex Garland at the helm (although both have producing credits).
But I was surprised and a little horrified at how much I could appreciate this movie.
The first movie in the franchise dealt with an outbreak which managed to take over the whole of England in 28 days. It was chaotic and strange, with a feeling of a child finding their legs on the playground littered with bullies. Much of the camera motion was of either a duck and weave or eye-eyed ignorant, leisurely pan and scan. People really didn't understand what they were up against or how to deal with it.
The manner in which WEEKS is handled is that of a seasoned and skeptical pro. They know that there is something bad out there, but much like a person who's been in one too many read-end auto collisions, it always seems to be hesitant and looking over its shoulder. When the outbreak finally does occur, the movie launches into a dizzying panic, people running and screaming in a frenzy, looking to find any other place to go but into the arms of hell.
The movie succeeds on that level. Taken as the adolescent faze in the development of the series, it is extremely solid in its delivery. There isn't a large amount of story to tell or dialog to ruin. People run, people scream, people die. We learn that there is a genetic anomaly which will allow the person to take on the virus but not exhibit the outbreak symptoms. But in that hopeful nature, where we look for the cure in the key to our ultimate doom, all fit hits the proverbial shan.
There has been talk of making a third installment (and yes, they are planning on entitling it "28 YEARS LATER") with Garland and Boyle back at the helm. The movie will most likely contain more of the odd sense of humour and dark twisted nature that is par for the course with those two gentlemen.
But that doesn't mean that this movie didn't work. It is much, much better than I expected it to be and in a world where things are nonsensical or exclusionary in the delivery of sequels, this one could actually make a good deal of sense standing on its own. Which alone, says something very big.

Just got this on Blu-Ray. Love it. One of the best horror sequels ever in my book. The only thing that didn't work for me was how Don acted once he was infected. Everyone else was in an uncontrolable rage, yet he is shown multiple times standing quitely, waiting for the right moment to act. Too smart for an infected.
I heard the sequel is going to be called 28 Months Later and will take place in Russia. |
