Unique and interesting but flawed
Alexandre Rockwell isn't a name that you're going to notice offhand. But you've watched something that he's directed before. The man at the helm of the segment in the movie 4 ROOMS entitled "The Wrong Man," and pretty much every other low budget truly indie film that he's made has starred the incomparable Steve Buscemi, you have to hand it to the guy... he knows how to get a hold of some really good and interesting actors.
The problem is that he doesn't really know what to do with them. I was really happy to watch this not only for the incredible Peter Dinklage, but because he got the actress Karyn Parsons, best known as Hilary Banks on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Gorgeous and unconventionally good as a black actress that for some reason isn't recognized as being a black actress (gee, thanks Will), I wish she was in more stuff.
The other really good addition here is Rose Rollins, an actress that I'm not all that familiar with outside of the movie SOMETHING NEW (a great flick, by the way). She's touching and sensitive here without losing credibility as being the hardcore girlfriend to a rap mogul.
The problem is that there is so much going on in this movie that your head starts to spin and you end up not caring about the people in it. I will say that it's one of the most unique movies I've seen in some time and it tries really hard... it just tries TOO hard.
Peter Stormare is also good, but he's so f*cking annoying that you end up hating him... a tribute to how good he is at being such a loathsome character.
