Movie Review by Tim
January 10th, 2008

I wanted to like it but.....

I really wanted to like this film but I couldn't seem to find one thing that I liked about it. It follows the Mountain Meadows Massacre which is a true story that happened in Utah around 1857. The film is set as a love story between a man and woman, with the massacre as just part of the struggle for them to be together. This was the first mistake.

Take for instance Braveheart, that was a great film that followed specific events based around a love story. Braveheart had the right chemistry, a love story still with very violent and intense battle sequences.

This film lacks any one good plot strategy. EXTREMELY poor character development is the main problem. The couple that meets seems to fall in love at first site. However they barely are shown on screen together or doing anything with each other before they are already suppose to be getting married. As the audience you are not convinced that they are in love but that its two kids making a stupid decision sort of like puppy love.

None of the characters are used enough to make you learn about them or even care about them. Specifically, for example you know more about this one specific horse then you know about most characters, just very poorly written and devised.

Then you are waiting the whole film for this massacre since the film evolves around the Mountain Meadows MASSACRE, when it finally comes its the weakest battle epic that I have ever seen. Hardly violent enough to make you feel sorry for the people and these are INNOCENT people that are getting slaughtered. The battle scene is very quick and again just poorly executed.

Then they take a nobody character in the film and try to turn him into Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver which just doesn't go along with the film at all. I really am just having a hard time saying anything positive about it. I'm not sorry that I watched it, just was hoping for a much better film. Usually films set in older time periods really intrigue, and easily satisfy me but I left this film thinking how much better it could have been.
