Perfect "Fracture"
Favorite Movie Quote: ""drive a stake into" the bad guy's heart"
I stumbled across a minor film masterpiece called "Fracture" on a premium channel. It is a thriller about a murder committed right before your very eyes and the guy gets away with it. "How-did-he-do-it?" Well, the murderer is Anthony Hopkins in playful Lechter mode, the smartest guy in the room. Pitted against him is Ryan Gosling as a DA with a 97% conviction rate who can't convict. Gosling is distracted by an upcoming move into big bucks corporate law and doesn't do his homework. As an actor Gosling uses a southern accent and sideburns (are they the Texas equivalent of having large feet/hands/...) to flesh out a man on the make. Hopkins and Gosling are cat and mouse in the best "Sleuth" style. Mano a Murderer Mano.
The camera moves, lighting, editing, and staging are so elegant and therefore surprising from a director, Gregory Hoblit , who earned his spurs on TV's "Hill Street Blues" with its shaky "Let's be careful out there" style. I felt like I was treated as a 5 star guest in a posh movie cathedral. I watched it a 2nd time just to see if there were any plot holes and there weren't; it is very tight. I read another review that said it got altruistic at the end but I disagree. This is a contest between 2 heavyweights and the winner takes all.
Love it.
Simply, Simon

| I agree...I found this film much more entertaining then the critics let on. My wife also loved it and I think Anthony Hopkins played his character all too well. |
