Not original enough for me.
This film started off with a terrific scene, but declined from there on. Shia LaBeouf, this year's mega-star, appears in this film and again does a great job, but that doesn't save this film from it's poorly executed horror techniques. For what should have been an amazing thriller, it turned out to be nothing extraordinary, but something basic and overdone.
Most people are comparing this to Alfred Hitchcock's classic Rear Window and bashing it because it appears to be a total rip-off. While I agree, it is a remake of Rear Window, I have to say it isn't a rip-off. It's modern and it works... not completely different, but enjoyable. The not-so-enjoyable part(s) of this movie is its unoriginality and predictability. Just like my last two reviewed films, The Invasion and The Nanny Diaries, I've seen this material before, and I knew what to expect. It's unfortunate that no new ideas are being used in movies these days.
The typical codes of horror cinema are used properly in this film, but that doesn't save it from its unoriginality. It is an entertaining movie, but when looked at as a film, entertainment is not enough. I wasn't expecting much, since it was clear this was going to be a rip-off of Rear Window anyways.
I would still recommend this to people because it does provide solid entertainment. It's a good thriller, but does not satisfy me and probably most film fans because of it's lack of originality and poor excuse of a twist ending.
