What the f*ck did they do to Trinity?
Let me start off by calling a spade a spade. Shia LeBeouf (French for "the beef") is f*cking hot. Call me a perverted old woman, but that kid has a huge future ahead of him based on the fact that he oozes sexuality even as a youngun'. Gone are his geeky Even Stevens days. The Beef is here to show you where it is. (*wokka wokka*)
That said, this is a rather lousy flick. Using the tragic death of a teen's father as the set-up for his bad behaviour and subsequent homicidal killer neighbor's scenario, I just can't get behind the fact that this movie is considered to be a great thriller. There is nothing to it. Where movies in the past were able to maintain an air of mystery to them (this movie is largely influenced by a great Hitchcock film REAR WINDOW, something that I think everyone should run out and watch) DISTURBIA features some in your face chills, but nothing that could rival the more subtle "did he or didn't he?" days of yore.
There are a couple of things that I liked about the film, namely LeBeouf and his connection with his female lead as well as the fact that his best friend was a goofy Asian kid and the police officer giving him sh*t was Mexican. It's nice to see some faces which aren't entirely whitewashed.
But much like I had problems with the pseudo scary nature of one of director Caruso's other flicks, TAKING LIVES, I just couldn't look past whatever good acting or chemistry between the leads there was. When you can figure out the mystery so early into the film and then have to sit back and wait to see how scary the director thinks he's being, you - well, at least I - get tired and bored easily.
Some other major problems with the flick include the young female lead being confronted in her car by the suspect and allowing him to touch and creep her out without speaking up. Even the most timid of teenage girls, especially ones that come from affluent suburban families where their sense of entitlement is through the roof, would have screamed or at the very least laughed at the man's accusations of her hitting on him.
The other problem lies with the other female in the movie. Sadly, Carrie-Anne Moss, that actress who normally is cast as the hot female (including her role as Trinity in THE MATRIX) has apparently become mother to a teenager fodder. Why didn't someone tell me? And why didn't someone tell her that taking a role as a mother of a troubled teen who needs guidance and support was bullsh*t? That there was no way the mother of a teenager like that, especially one who'd lost her husband in such a tragic traffic accident only a year before, would be as chipper and "la-dee-dah" as she is. That she wouldn't just pop in and out of scenes whenever it was most convenient for the storyline.
Ugh.
This is a movie that will deliver the goods to most teenagers and frighten the pants off of the kids whose parents only allow them to watch the Disney Channel because that's easier than having to talk to or educate them in any manner. But for the rest of us who have brains, this movie is sorely lacking.
